This pop-up bar (PUB), bridges together Southern Efficiency and Mockingbird Hill to recreate the nostalgic wonderland of Super Mario Bros in one bar, and open a window into Japanese culture and springtime feels in the other. In Southern Efficiency (located at 1841 7th Street NW), patrons will experience one of DC’s own iconic artists, Maggie O’Neil, by viewing a mural painting of “Flynn’s Jefferson Memorial” that stretches across the wall of the bar. The visual aesthetics of this painting are so realistic that it feels as though you could simply reach out and get a whiff of the aroma from a cherry blossom bud. O’Neil’s mural is further complimented by decorations on the walls and ceiling. The walls have been warmed by a soft, springtime pink and the ceilings are covered with thousands of handmade origami cherry blossoms, cranes and life-like tree branches.
Right next door, patrons will find that Mockingbird hill (located at 1843 7th Street) has been transformed into an 8-bit reanimation of the Nintendo world of Super Mario Bros. From ceilings, several “Pirhana Plants” hang and have actually been engineered to move in and out of their green tubing, just like the video game. Behind the bar, the backdrop’s design includes a scenic tribute to the world of Mario, with sky blue coloring and layers of brick steps. Oh, did I mention there was a whole room dedicated to the “Turtle of Terror” himself? I am talking about “Bowser’s Dungeon”. In this dark, ghostly room, there is a painted portrait of the Boo ghost and the ceilings are crowned with life-like figurines of Thwomps.
If the decor and atmosphere of these two bars have not convinced you enough to come check this place out, then maybe you should take a look at the menus for drinks and food!
One of the most popular drinks at Cherry Blossoms Bar is the Neko Colada, which contains: Miso Infused Rhum Agricole, Sweet Vermouth, Falernum, Luxardo Amaretto, Coconut Cream, Lime, Mandarin Orange. This unique and flavor-enriched drink comes in a novelty Neko cat mug!
In an exclusive interview with URBANSCRAWL, one of the partners, Paul Taylor, explained, “this drink has been so popular, that [they] have sold over 10,000 of them since opening on March 1st!”. That is almost 360 drinks per day–can someone say, “me-wow!”
I must say, one of my favorites has to be the “I Call Yoshi!” or “Yoshi”, served at the Mario Bros. bar. This drink contains unfiltered sake, Midori, Green Chartreuse, cucumber melon, and lemon. After a few these green-colored cocktails, you might felt as though you are slipping in and out of the Mushroom Kingdom yourself. Great taste and an excellent kick!
