KIND OF A BIG DEAL: A WILL FERRELL POP-UP BAR

Whether you’re still caught up in the turbulent season of politics, trying to escape the impending doom of DC’s summer heat, or honestly just trying to make it through the week, one thing’s for certain: everybody in the District could use a hearty laugh (preferably paired with a hefty pour.) Enter Stay Classy DC, a pop-up bar that will be themed around a favorite “funny guy” – Will Ferrell.

Now, what exactly, does a Will-Ferrell-themed bar entail? If you assume there might be scotchy scotch scotch, leather-bound books, and smells of rich mahogany, it’s safe to say you are pretty spot on. The bar is a spin off of New York’s Stay Classy, the original Will-Ferrell themed bar, and launched in DC on H Street NE earlier last month, with plans to stick around through July, and perhaps even later, depending on the popularity. Anchorman’s Ron Burgundy isn’t the only Will Ferrell character to get a nod in this new watering hole – the place is filled to the brim with tips of the hat to other beloved Will alter egos from classics like Step Brothers, Talladega Nights, Old School, Blades of Glory, and more.

While the original NYC version of this liquor-infused shrine to Will was alcohol-only, DC’s version will involve some delicious grub to go along with all of the booze. The drinks, of course, have names that would make anyone blush when relaying their order to the bartender, with titles such as “Smelly Pirate Hooker,” “Shake and Bake,” and “Whale’s Vagina.”  The food is also over the top in its own way with big, one-of-a-kind burgers. Ma’s Meatloaf burger, for example, pays homage to Wedding Crashers and will feature “a toasted brioche bun brushed with honey garlic butter and topped with a seasoned fried potato cake, two cuts of meatloaf, smoked cheddar cheese, tomato chutney sauce, and crispy onion straws.” Some other entrees include “A Nice Seafood Dinner,” “Boats & Hoes Burgers,” and “More Cowbell.”

Stay Classy’s co-creator, Zach Neil, was quoted in the DCist speaking to his inspiration for the outlandish traveling hangout:

“There was nothing going on in the bar world that would make anyone my age want to go to a bar. So I though, what if I just opened something I’m interested in. I tried to think of something in my life, no matter how bad my day was, something that could consistently cheer me up.

Either it would be the dumbest thing I’ve ever done, or it would fail miserably but I’d have a really great story…if I lost my money at least I’m doing it over the top and ridiculous.”

Beyond the wild drink names and fun surroundings, the bar also promises some unique experiences. For example, one night they are flying in one of Ferrell’s best impersonators to read “the news” behind a phony news set. The news that night? Which shots, exactly, are on special. Not to mention that every night there’s a photobooth where you can snap selfies with a permanent version the anchorman himself, and there might even be a movie screening…or two.

This isn’t Neil’s first rodeo with gimmicks. In fact, after a successful run with Stay Classy in New York and a short stint in Boston, he was also one of the masterminds responsible for a Beetlejuice-heavy themed bar that doubles as an ode to Tim Burton. Will that be next for our city? All bets are on, but in the mean time…

Stay Classy, DC.
