HEALTHY EATS IN DC: MEAL DELIVERY SERVICE

Okay, so January may have come and gone without any major strides toward your New Year’s goal, but make no mistake: this can still be your year. Even if you’re dedicated to eating healthy, choking down Brussels sprouts and passing up the cookies, it can still be hard to find the time to cook real food. Or, maybe you have the time, but everything you make tastes bland which ultimately leads you right back to your takeout-eating ways. In enters modern convenience, a savior of sorts: meal delivery services. This saves you both from doing meal prep and also from pretending you’re going to eat the plain (now soggy) sweet potatoes and chicken that you made four days ago instead of giving in to lunch with coworkers. It’s a chance to be healthy, stay sane, and eat food that you actually want –– a trifecta worthy of dreams.

While options such as Plated or Blue Apron have taken off, there are also some locally grown companies offering up meals worth considering (with less prep involved, too!) Here’s a roundup:

Vegetable and Butcher:

Besides super cute branding and photography that will make your stomach rumble, V + B also has a mouth-watering menu that can easily help you stay on track, sans lackluster meal prep noms. The company was started by a boyfriend and girlfriend duo, who struggled with how long sitting down for a meal together was taking (esp. considering different dietary choices, such as veganism ). They wanted more time to enjoy their meals , less worry about what they were making –– and discovered quickly that there was a market of people who wanted the same. They cater to people wanting gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan , and paleo-friendly options (or any combo of those), and so far have focused on neighborhoods in DC with a Whole Foods presence, which they feel helps them chase their demographic. Some examples of a weekday menu might include:

Tofu Scramble with Sweet Potato, Avocado, and Pico de Gallo

Coconut Curry Dal with Roasted Cauliflower

White Bean and Sweet Potato Stew

Territory Foods

Another meal delivery service with equal parts spice and spunk, Territory serves the DC-MD-VA areas, with recent expansion to places such as Texas and California. Territory is unique because they use a network of local nutritionists who then work with area chefs that cook inspired meals in their own local kitchens for Territory customers. They have a REAL Certification from sourcing and focusing on sustainability, meaning no antibiotics or hormones in their meats, animals raised without cages, and fresh, local, and organic ingredients when possible. All of their meals are gluten and dairy free. A sample weekday menu might include:

Spanish Frittata with Kale, Brussels Sprout & Bacon Hash

Garlic Chickpeas & Collards Over Quinoa

Artichoke Pesto Chicken with Spaghetti Squash

Mezze Box

MezzeBox comes from the heart and soul of founder Johnny Seikaly, who grew up with one foot in the US and the other in Lebanon. After traveling the world for a 9-5 type job, Seikaly was determined to share his family’s recipes with the DC metro area. The focus here is on fresh, Mediterranean ingredients that are both healthy and filling. While this isn’t a traditional meal prep service (more catering focused), and maintains the same menu weekly, it could still be used to curb meal prep woes. Sample menu items include:

Mezze Box (comes with a main, two sides, and a dessert). Might come with a medley of lentils, rice, and caramelized onions. Served with shredded cabbage salad, grape leaves, pita, and dessert.

Healthy Fresh Meals

Healthy Fresh Meals is a prime example of why meal prepping services have become so popular in the first place: they make clean eating simpler, period. They prep, cook, and deliver sealed fresh meals from scratch weekly to the DMV area with the intention to make it easier for folks to reach their goals (such as losing weight, building muscle, or eating clean). A sample menu might include:

Blueberry Protein Pancakes ( served with a side of turkey sausage and lite agave syrup)
