THINGS YOU PROBABLY DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL

For DC insiders, there’s a lot to this city –– there’s old and new architecture, an art scene, plenty of history, food and drinks to enjoy, culture abound, and so much more. To tourists, sometimes DC can seem less multidimensional –– they know our home for its monuments and cherry blossoms. And while yes, we’ve all seen the monuments, it’s safe to say there’s more to our city that meets they eye (or that goes in a tour book)…but that goes for the monuments, too. So what don’t you know about some of the cities most famous sights? You might be surprised. Here are some little-known facts about one of the most famous monuments here: The Lincoln Memorial. HOW TO CELEBRATE JULY 4TH IN AMERICA’S CAPITOL

Remember when it was winter? Gosh that was awful. But we made it. And now, somehow, we’re already well on our way to blasting through another summer, complete with frantic sprints after the Ice Cream truck and smothering ourselves in aloe vera after a smidge too much sun. Ah, the icy hot nature of June. The fact that we’re well into this month is hard to believe, with the days flying by much faster than I can lose the weight I want to rock this bikini season (is it too early to give up?). Soon, we’ll be in July, which is pretty much smack dab in the middle of summer’s fun. So, we best all plan to make the most of it…and that means wearing our red, white, and blue and finding plans that have just the right ratio of fireworks to booze…that part is crucial. DC MAKES THE CUT AS ONE OF THE 10 BEST AMERICAN CITIES FOR URBAN PARKS

People dancing, people laughing

A man selling ice cream…

Hopefully those two simple lines have sent you into a head-bobbing, joyful rendition of “Saturday in the Park,” a classic ode as to how amazing green escapes can be among city streets. If you’ve ever lived close to a park, you might be one of those people who swears by the ideal of “location, location, location.” Parks are where dogs (and people alike) can run around to get out some of their boundless energy. They’re where kites grace the skies and flowers bloom from the ground. They’re where you can go pretending you’re planning to run, only to decide last minute that you’re cool“just walking for today.” They’re certainly the sight of some ice-cream treats. And last, but certainly not least, they are a breath of fresh air and a place of respite from the day to day rumble that pushes us all along in the city. DC DEVELOPMENT(S): WEST HALF

Take me out to the ball game,

Take me out with the crowd…

Buy some peanuts and Cracker Jacks,

I don’t care if I never get back…

Is this the song DC will be singing as they root, root, root for the home teams of JBG and ODA Architecture as they complete work on West Half, a development located at the foot of the Washington Nationals major league baseball stadium ? It might as well be. DC DEVELOPMENT(S): WEST HALF

THE GREATEST HOSTESS GIFTS YOU CAN SCORE IN DC

If you’ve hosted anybody in your humble abode, you can probably share in reminiscing about the highs and lows of hosting. Not ringing any bells? Let me give you an example. High: Having guests praise your amazing ability to pick out high-brow snacks from Whole Foods AND making them believe that yeah, you totally eat like this all the time. Low: Having everyone turn to you after they devour your perfectly laid out charcuterie board, with that “what’s next?” look in their eyes. A cheese board is an event in and of itself, people! DRINK, EAT, AND BASK IN SUNSHINE (FINALLY): DC’S BEST PATIOS

DCers, it’s been a while since we have all been able to share a meal al fresco. Fear not, though, because the monster that was Winter 2018 is behind us –– it’s finally patio season. I doubt I even have to ask for amens after that long drudgery, but I’ll do it regardless. Can I get an amen?!

This is the first year in forever when I haven’t even been bothered by the fact that the air is so thick with pollen I have to consider how my outfits will match with the dusty yellow backdrop that is Spring in the District. In fact, I’ve considered gathering all of the pollen together in a big pollen pile (the way you do with leaves in the fall) and jumping in it right after I’ve hyped myself up on some Zyrtec. In other words, I’m pretty excited that the cold weather is a distant memory. DRINK, EAT, AND BASK IN SUNSHINE (FINALLY): DC’S BEST PATIOS

DC STARTUP SPOTLIGHT: HATCH

If you don’t have an app, are you even a business? In all honestly, apps, though they sound fancy and sophisticated, aren’t right for every business model. But for many, they offer a modern, unique way to interact with both current and potential customers. However, for smaller businesses, the act of building an app can be daunting…and way too expensive. Hiring an agency to perfect a digital endeavor can be a kind of business pipe dream. Luckily, there’s a DC-based startup working hard behind the scenes to bring apps down to earth and make them a possibility for all businesses –– or at least most. DC STARTUP SPOTLIGHT: HATCH
