Thumbs up

As you may or may not have heard, Urban Scrawl is shutting down.  I won’t bore you with the details (we’re rebranding as a Russian troll farm to get some of that sweet, sweet Super PAC money for the midterms), but in this moment I’m keeping in mind the famous saying by Dr. Seuss: “Don’t be sad that it’s over, be glad that you averaged 30K unique pageviews per month!”  (Looking to hire a writer?  Call me.)  (But not until I’ve exhausted all my unemployment checks.) HOW TO AIRBNB YOUR PLACE LIKE A PRO

If you haven’t skipped out on a stark hotel room and opted for the cozy, home-team advantage of an Airbnb, you might want to reconsider your on-the-road rituals. After all, Airbnb has gone above and beyond to solidify their network of eager hosts as a great way for anyone to see cities near and far as a local –– and in the comfort of a home, rather than beneath scratchy hotel sheets and fluorescent lighting. So often, we think about where to go when you’re escaping your home, but what about how you can put your house to work for you? HOW TO AIRBNB YOUR PLACE LIKE A PRO

HOMES AWAY FROM HOME: THE BEST HOUSE EXCHANGE NETWORKS

“There’s no place like home” – Dorothy said it best, while she was lost on the Yellow Brick Road in Oz. But if you watched the movie close enough, you probably notice that she managed to have some fun while she was finding her way back home, too. She met friends (if they only had a brain), danced a little, sang a lot, and uncovered a world of color. Of course, eventually she clicked her ruby red slippers back together and was able to get back to good ole’ Kansas, but the point is: time away from home can be vital to remember why home is so homey in the first place. Opportunities to do that, however, can seem few and far between, when a vacation can mean lots of money spent on travel to your destination, a place to stay, eating out…the list of expenses can seem expansive. But if you’re up for sharing, there’s another way… HOMES AWAY FROM HOME: THE BEST HOUSE EXCHANGE NETWORKS

CABIN ESCAPES WITHIN DC’S REACH

I know the start of the new year is supposed to be invigorating, inspiring, and energizing, but I can’t be the only one that struggles to slog through January and February. More often than not, the start of the year feels like a grind. We’re deep in the midst of winter’s wrath, sick with cabin fever (and maybe something else if you didn’t get this year’s flu shot), and really ready for spring to get sprung already so we can complain about the fact that it’s hot while sitting in the sunshine! (There’s nothing better). CABIN ESCAPES WITHIN DC’S REACH

URBAN SCRAWL’S TOP STORIES OF 2017

201201021

Before we rush headlong into 2018, let’s take just a moment to pause and reflect on the things we did well in 2017.  And when I say “pause and reflect,” what I mean is, “slather ourselves in glory like a gravy-basted Christmas turkey.”

Without further ado, here are the top stories from 2017, minus a few evergreen posts that seem to get thousands of views every year no matter what.  (I’m not surprised that so many people are googling “buy legal weed in DC,” but I am a little surprised – not to mention concerned – that so many people are looking for abandoned buildings in DC.  I don’t understand it, so I’m just going to blame millennials.)
