Bonus_marchers_05510_2004_001_aToday, Poplar Point is known mostly as a polluted stretch of empty land along the Anacostia that always seems like it’s on the brink of being developed, but for whatever reason, never quite gets there.  But not many people remember that, less than a century ago, it was the site of what contemporary authorities considered a legitimate attempt to overthrow the US government. Demi Moore’s real name is Demetria Guynes.  I only mention it to prove that branding does actually matter, and why would neighborhoods be any exception?  Renaming neighborhoods isn’t a new thing in the District;  Columbia Heights was originally known as “Pleasant Plains” or “Cowtown.”  (The latter being arguably the worst neighborhood name I’ve ever heard, ever.)  And “NoMa” was only invented a few years ago, but we’ll get to that below.
